we're testing with JSON Strings and it seems that JSON Decode can't decode simple arrays, but just objects.

This DOES work:

Any ideas how I can get the values from the Array "sell" in the second example?
I don't get any array back, which I can pull the values from.

This is my experience as well. Also I reported last year that some more complex JSON strings with nestled arrays isn't decoded properly. As far as I know a feature request with number 22908 was opened. But actually I think that this should be a bug to be fixed, not a feature request...

Mats is correct, there is a feature request already in place. It is currently in development.
