Hello,

Yesterday a scenario occurred where a task executed against an offline agent and the task failed as expected.

Is it possible to TRAP for such conditions and send a notification to indicate that a remote agent is offline?

thank you
Scott

Scott,
if the remote task fails for any reason (including its agent offline) a "failure" arrow from that task can capture the failure. If that failure arrow starts a local task that sends an email that could a starting point to resolve your problem.

The next point would be to determine in that "failure" local task whether the failure was due to the remote agent being offline. One could think of an SQL query against the executionevents table in the database to ascertain that.

Jean,

Would your advice work if the first component to start the workflow were a "FILE WATCHER" component using the local agent?

thanks
Scott

Hello Scott,

If the File System Condition is monitoring a folder that resides on a Agent that is down then an Event is written to the Windows Event Viewer on the Agent machine in question (if the machine is still receiving power and the OS is up and running).

If the Agent (machine in question) is 'Offline' in the sense it is not accessible by the BPA Exection Server, then only an email would be sent due to an Agent being offline if the triggering mechanism was similar to a Scheduled Condition.

Hi Valentino

The most critical events are FILE conditions. We monitor a folder to see if files meet proper constraints and wake up the workflow to process these files via our ETL.
These are not "scheduled" tasks. The machine is up, the OS is running, but the agent is not responsive. I want to know if an email will be sent...or if the agent can't/doesn't respond a way for us to trap the error.

thanks
Scott

Hi Scott,

I do apologize but an "On Error" email will not be sent out for a missed File Trigger. You will receive an On Error email for a schedule trigger with the "Error Text: the agent is not connected".

Do you have multiple agents?

If so you can have the agents ping each other to make sure each agent is up and running.
