When we purchased the BPA solution for our location nearly 3 years ago, shortly thereafter we purchased a couple of licenses for agents. Since that time, we've not ever deployed them since for all our workflows we've been able to fulfill a specific need without actually needing them. Leadership is actually considering dropping the licenses due to costs - so I'm looking to understand practical and real-world situations where we can justify having them. Suggestions?

Hi James,
I have forwarded your request to your Account Manager. He will reach out to you soon and answer any questions you may have regarding this issue.

My account manager? I'm looking for input from people in the field that have actually used remote agents. Is my AE going to have experience with using them?

James,
Ricardo's reply is not intended to close the thread. People are free to provide any real world cases that may help you in your decision. However, an agent is required to run tasks within a workflow. You will need to have at least one. The purpose of the account manager is to assist you with your decision since this will involve maintenance renewal of your licenses.

Thanks Ricardo. Sure, that makes sense - and I don't mind discussing with my AM, but I'm really not looking so much for help in making a decision to keep the licenses as I am looking for input from actual users of remote agents. We currently have one agent in use, which runs on the automate server. I'm looking for practical uses in which people have employed real-world uses where agents are used on other servers aside from the automate server. Does this make sense? That wasn't really something I was thinking my AM would be able to do.

Hello James,
A simple use of a Remote Agent that the large majority of our clients use them for is this: Imagine a scenario in which a workflow/task cannot be executed on the BPA Server in question. Why? 1 Because either the needed software (another 3 party application) resides on another machine and is not allowed to be installed on the server. 2 For security reasons access to files/folders/networkshares/machines is not granted on the server. 3 Server is not allowed to access Internet. 4 The server over time becomes sluggish do to an ever increasing amount of workflows/tasks as the business grows. 5 The organization has multiple offices, spanning within the same building, different cities, different states and even different countries. Thus 'local' execution of said task will have to run on a Remote Agent (machine) instead to facilitate the needs of the organization. BPA Server as the ability to send the needed tasks to be executed on a Remote Agent and report back to the Execution and Management Servers regardless of the location of said machine. I hope this answers your question.

Hi James,
Two other examples we see in the field are: 1. Multiple worflows that interact with a GUI, but have to run simultaneously. They will interfere with eachother. 2. Time sensitive workflows. We can distribute load over multiple agents. We are currently working with a hospital that needs to convert around 1 million patient dossiers which would take the ERP system and BPA around 300 days. We are going to distribute the load over 10 agents so it'll be done in a month. Regards, Benjamin

Hello Benjamin,
Thank you for including those other two equally real-world examples of the need for a Remote Agent.

Hello James,
If a Remote Agent is to exist outside of the existing Domain wherein BPA Server resides; I would make sure the following was done: 1 Can the remote machine (let's call this environment Domain B) in question where the BPA Agent software is to be installed; accessible from Domain A? And vice-versa? 2 Any and all workflows/tasks should include the necessary username|password|domain credentials set specifically in their corresponding 'Logon properties' to assure execution of the object(s) in question.
