When trying to establish a connection with my SQL server on 1and1, I get the following error:
[Microsoft SQL Server Native Client 10.0]: Login timeout expired
[Microsoft SQL Server native Client 10.0\: A network-related or
instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to
SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance
name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote
connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.
[Microsoft SQL Server Native Client 10.0]: Named Pipes Provider: Could
not open a connection to SQL Server [53].
Which is followed by:
Connection failed with initilization error. Check name and authentication settings.
Am I using the wrong type of server settings?

Justin, very quickly:
You are trying to connect to MySQL DB, and using Microsoft SQL Server Client. They are not the same or related except in the sharing SQL in their name. Both applications respond to SQL (Structured Query Language) to access the data they are storing, but are in no way similar in code base. I think you can use an OleDB connection to connect to it (or load a client to your machine that does MySQL and use their connector).

Edit: On MySQL page I saw they have downloadable code, but give the OleDB a try first, it would be the first I would try, it's kind of a generic connector and should work.

Thank you Hamid. I tried several of the OLEDB's available in automate, but I get the following error when testing the connection:

Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider.

[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist

or access denied.

Any other ideas?

Hi Justin,

Are you able to connect outside of BPA yet on the same machine that BPA is installed on?

No I talked to my SQL provider (1And1) and was told they do not allow outside connections.

Does anyone know a work around for that?

Hi Justin,

Unfortunately, if the vendor does not allow external connections to the database then BPA will not be able to connect.

Do you know of any vendors that are friendly and compatible with BPA?

Hi Justin,

You can create an Amazon EC2 instance and install a database that has external access. I'm sure there are a lot of vendors that allow external access to their databases. Why are you trying to create/access your database in this fashion?

I would like to execute SQL queries on a database to lookup and track information.

I can use excel, but it has limitations.

Do you know of a better way?

Hey Justin,

In that case you may want to create an Amazon EC2 instance and install a database that has external access as previously mentioned, or as you have mentioned, use excel or a csv to track records.

You may also want to look into create a SQL database of your own if you are planning on populating a database with your own information anyways.

HostGator, Inmotion Hosting, and DomainRacer permit remote access to databases. I can connect to MySQL on HostGator using different remote MySQL client, but not AutoMate yet.  Haven't tried Inmotion Hosting but its site says remote MySQL access is permitted.  IPOWER and Arrixe do not permit.
