A few times now, randomly is seems, one of my tasks goes in to a state of Stopped and still says it's running even though it has finished.

This latest incident was about 03:15 am and from this point on the Tasks next launch date kept updating according to it's schedule but the Last run date never updated and the task never actually executed again.

The only way to reset the status was to restart the service.

The tasks priority is set to 'Limit number of simultaneous instances of tis task' = 1 so I can understand why it never executed again but I don't understand why the task suddenly stopped and still said running even when finished.

I'm running AM 10.7.0.3 Pro 64 bit on a Win 7 Pro virtual machine. I've also had the same happen in v10.4.2.1 a couple of times.

I haven't run this task in AM 11 yet so not sure if the same happens in v11?

I've attached a screen shot of Task Adminstrator when we discovered the issue and the task steps.

Hi AaronSkwarczek,

When this occurs, do you see a corresponding AMTask.exe process running on the system?

Hi Justin,

I was going to say that this problem is so random that we might have to wait another week or two or more before it happens again but actually there is still an AMTask.exe running on the system now but no tasks are running, is this normal or should it disappear when the task has finished?

Many thanks,
Aaron

Hello,

That is correct, the AMTask.exe process should disappear once the task is completed.

What user is the AMTask.exe process running as (you can check this through Windows Task Manager)?

Hi Richardo,

It's running as COMPDEPT which is the user that's logged into the machine, and the default user set in Options.

Hello,

If that task shouldn't be running, I would suggest that you terminate the job from Windows Task Manager.

Hello,

Ok will do.

Question is have you seen this before or do you know why it happens as this is not the first time it's has happened.

I know v11 hasn't been out for that long but have you had any reports of a similar problem in v11?

Hello,

You shouldn't have a task that is left running. Do you have any tasks that did not complete successfully within the logs?

Hello,

No, tasks completed ok when this occurred. In the logs the last entry for this task was early hours of the morning then it only started logging again when we had to restart the automate service to get the task running again.

Hello Ricardo,

Not since no, but it may be another couple of weeks before it happens again, seemingly at random unfortunately.

In the last 2 months or so it's probably happened 3 or 4 times with two different tasks.

I will email the next time it happens.

Hello Aaron,

Please do so, make sure to note the time and any tasks that may have run when the issue occurs the next time.

An export of the Event Viewer (application) could be useful as well.

Hello Ricardo,

The option seems to save events to an .evtx file, is that ok for you?

I have this same problem on the same version, 10.7.0.3, running on Windows Server 2003 x64 (I know, don't laugh too long). My task runs every 30 minutes. Once the queue fills all other jobs halt.

The task originally had 11 steps and I added the Stop Task step and it still remains active in the AM Task Manager and Windows Task Manager. I added a Time Out on the task for 5 minutes as well and it still hangs open.

The only AM10 items in Application Events is SharePoint Listener Enabled/Disabled

Hello Marie,

Does this issue tend to happen when you are away from the machine or during overnight execution?

If you run the task while you are at your computer watching your screen, does it complete successfully?

Please right click on the task, select properties then logon, what are the settings configured there?

Lastly, please let us know how the machine is left for overnight execution, logged off, locked or disconnected?

thanks!

I am actually Dwayne, support is working on fixing my account, Ricardo told me it might take a few days.

The issue occurs with each scheduled run of the task, every 30 minutes. If i manually run the task, it runs completes and closes. The task completes during auto execution but does not close.

Logon Properties:

Workstation Logged on: Logged on user

Logged Off: Dont run

Locked: Current user

This server stays logged in and locked using a network service account, the same one configured as the default user for AM10.

Time Out setting: Time out after 5 minutes

I also have expanded logs enabled for this task and it reports that the last step, Stop this task, is completing successfully

I called in and spoke with Devin. He changed the SQL data source to use Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server instead of the SQL Native Client I originally set it up with. That seems to have resolved the issue for me.

I am not sure how that might help you Aaron but good luck in your quest.

Yeah, I'm not using any SQL and mine seems more random than your issue too.

Like you the AM logs all indicate that the task finishes ok and the event logs all seem to be related to monitoring/listening etc. I'll have to wait until it fails again though to see if there is anything else of use in the event logs.

Hi Aaron,

Ok, let us know.  It would be ideal if we can do a support session while the issue is happening as well.

I'm seeing the same issue using A10.7.0.3 on WIN 2012R2 x64
In this case, the task is just launching a batch script, waiting for the batch to end, then closing.
On one task that I found stuck for a long time I added an END after the batch call-out. That did not seem to help.

Also, after killing the task in Task Manager, it basically came back -- not running the steps but just showing as Running in the Task Administrator.
This persisted after stopping and restarting the service. Since we were migrating Automate to a different server before the task would be triggered again, we just let it sit.
Now it's happening on the new server. Since I have the properties set to ''Limit Simultaneous Instances = 1; Do Not Run' I'm worried that this task will just not run when it is scheduled for today.

Is anyone seeing this odd behavior in A11?

I made a point of monitoring Automate this afternoon.
I logged on just before the task was set to run and watched Automate successfully launch and reschedule the task. The oddity is that the Admin Console STILL says the task is running.

[Sorry, but I can't seem to attach a screen-shot to this post.]

We're glad it ran but we're still concerned that the GUI is displaying the wrong status (Runnning) and icon (Green A). Plus that gives us a bit less confidence in the "Limit Simultaneous Instances of this Task" setting.

Does Automate 11 resolve this quirk?

Hello,

Would it be possible to set-up a GoToAssist session where we can take a closer look at this issue? If this is possible please send an email over to AutoMate.Support@helpsystems.com with a list of your availability.

Note: Please reference this forum thread in your email.
